Schwartz Farms

Schwartz Farms

URL:http://www.schwartzfarmsohio.com/

Schwartz Farms was founded by Thomas Schwartz Sr. in 1956 as a dairy and 200 acres of grain farm. Tom Sr. and his two sons, Tom Jr. and Dan, eventually sold the dairy cows in 1979 and became an all grain farm. At that time, Tom Sr. and his sons farmed approximately six hundred acres. Then in 1989, Schwartz Farms was formed as a general partnership between Tom Sr. and his two sons, Tom Jr. and Dan, farming roughly 1,500 acres at that point. Since the passing of Tom Sr. in 1995, Dan and Tom Jr. have expanded operations to approximately 3,500 acres of Corn, Soybeans, Wheat, Oats, and Barley. Schwartz Farms is involved in the international foodgrade soybean industry since 1996. During this year, they began a Seed & Foodgrade Soybean business. This move has allowed Schwartz Farms to expand its operation without adding any additional growing crop acres through contracts with local growers. Annually, approximately 6,500 acres are contracted for foodgrade soybean production. Schwartz Farms sells these beans domestically and exports them to numerous East Asian countries, such as Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore and Korea. Also, Schwartz Farms sells wheat, barley, oats, foodgrade and Roundup Ready soybean seed domestically and in Canada.

Soybeans used for natto are required to be of high quality with consideration for genetic modification and sustainability, and are selected for their small size with no cracks or blemishes.

Soybeans for natto are produced under strict quality control in several Midwestern states in the U.S. (origins include North Dakota, Michigan, and Minnesota). These soybeans are collected at ports on the West Coast, mainly by rail and heavy trucks, and from there are transported across the Pacific and Atlantic oceans to Japan. About 10% of natto soybeans are also shipped to Japan from East Coast states such as Virginia and North Carolina. In addition, some food-grade soybeans not used for natto (“non-GMO” soybeans used for tofu, miso, soy sauce, etc.) are exported to Japan by barge down the Mississippi River, via the Panama Canal, and then by bulk carrier.
Thus, soybeans for natto and other food products destined for Japan are produced in the vast expanses of the United States and exported through various transportation routes. This allows for stable procurement that can flexibly respond to risks such as abnormal weather conditions or changes in circumstances in some regions.

Upon arrival in Japan, soybeans are processed into natto (fermented soybeans) at natto manufacturers' plants and sorting facilities in the Gulf. Such soybeans are fermented with natto bacillus and processed into natto. The soybeans then pass through retailers and restaurants before being delivered to consumers. In recent years, more and more products with the Sustainable Mark are being produced in the U.S. using sustainably produced and managed soybeans and can be eaten with peace of mind.
